Movie is an adaptation of a book by the same name written by Jonathan Safran Foer. Story based after the tragedy of 9/11.

The critics extremely divided by the movie. Box Office Magazine critic Peter Hammond wrote, “It’s an emotional powerhouse of a film, an unforgettable and rewarding motion picture experience.”

On the other side of the spectrum The Village Voice critic Nick Tinkerton wrote, “…abundance of “epiphanies,” one after another, amount to a tactical assault on viewer sentiments.”

Story set one year after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Follows young Oskar (Thomas Horn) who has Asperger’s (a type of autism). He lost his father (Tom Hanks) in one of the Twin Towers. His mother (Sandra Bullock) disconnected with her son as she grieves the loss of her husband. Oskar finds a message in his father’s closet, which sends him into a journey of discovering the world around him.

Film did not do well at the box office. This is the type of movie to watch as a rental because of its heavy-handed emotional content. I cannot find what the budget was for this movie. Domestically it’s made around $14 million.

Movie is a long shot and in no way a serious contender for “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards. Due to its sentiment and tragedy, it is understandable why the Academy members included it as a nominee.
