Are You There, Chelsea?Season 1, Episode: “Pilot.

The pilot episode of the series based loosely on Chelsea Handler’s book, Are You There Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea, fails to bring the laughs to the table, or jail.

In short, the characters are introduced by Laura Prepon from That 70s Show. She plays the role of Chelsea Handler. The real Chelsea Handler plays the part of Sloane, the older Christian-banging sister of Chelsea.

Chelsea’s best friend Olivia, (some random short Korean) seems to be her pit bill in protecting Chelsea from harm’s way.

The show begins with Chelsea getting a DUI. In Jail forcing Chelsea to brief kiss a butch female so she won’t get hurt in the can.

The pilot program then takes some low blows at gingers with clown hair and even hairier carpets, in their pants. Comparing ginger’s private parts to a clown in a leg lock.

Not funny.

Or, maybe I just don’t have that kind of sense of humor.

Her new awkward roommate Dee Dee jeered at for maintaining her celibacy. Also for doing an awkward cat dance.

Chelsea maintains her position as a bartender at the Ultimate Sports Bar with a cute coworker that she hooked up with once, only to find that their personalities did not mesh because of their need to dominate.

Chelsea’s sister Sloane gives birth to a baby and I guess in this case, Chelsea has somehow changed her alcoholic ways by helping Sloane with the birth and moving into a new apartment.

This didn’t really hit the nail for me in terms of pilot shows in general. Most importantly, a pilot show is supposed to spark the audience’s interest in the show.

That of which it failed to do.

Was the show’s strange pokes at gingers worthwhile? Or am I just too stiff?

Watch Are You There, Chelsea? Wednesdays 8:30/7:30c on NBC.
