Glee – Season 3, Episode 9: “Extraordinary Merry Christmas”

The…worst…episode…ever!

Now don’t you slurpee slush me in the face. You know it’s true. The highly anticipated Christmas show bombed, sank, tanked… you get the drift. So what they sang a total of nine songs this episode. I’m not impressed. New Directions rode their sleigh to the South Pole, not the North Pole.

Mercedes started the show with “All I Want for Christmas is You.” The girl can sing, no doubt. Rest of the Glee members sang, danced, and decorated the tree. Cutesy. Okay, off to a good start.

Sue Sylvester (our favorite Scrooge) asked for an unselfish favor–gasp! Well, she did lose her beloved sister last year. I’ll play along with Sue filled with a tiny crumb of the Christmas spirit. She asked Kurt, Arnie and Blaine to sing at a homeless shelter. They agreed.

Irish boy croons “Blue Christmas.” He’s a throwaway character.

Will tells his class that PBS wants them to perform on television. Uh, what about the homeless shelter? It’s on the same night. Yeah, right, anything to a break into Hollywood.

Artie assigned to direct the special. Audition held in auditorium. Rachel belts “I Wish I had a River.” Most depression Christmas song ever. What a waste of vocal chords. Rachel and Blaine sang original song “Extraordinarily Merry Christmas” – yawn.

Off to the Holiday Spectacular rehearsal filmed in black and white, Judy Garland style. In a word – cheesy. Setting was in Kurt and Blaine’s fake living room. Dialogue bor-ing. Laugh track fake and faker (is that a word?). And what about the homeless? Yeah, right.

Glee members sang: “Let it Snow,” “My Favorite Things,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” and “Christmas Wrappings.” Not the best selection of Christmas songs compared to their talent.

PBS canceled the special so NOW the kids chose to sing for the homeless. Great example Glee you set there for Christmas. New Direction’s ambition trumped the Christmas spirit of giving. Yes, they finally sang to the homeless. “Do They Know it’s Christmas.” The black and white sequence was awful. Here Glee, I have a red slushy for you.

Did you enjoy the Christmas episode? What Christmas performance was your favorite?
